Why Adults Shouldn’t Skip Backseat Seatbelts

Why Adults Shouldn’t Skip Backseat Seatbelts

One of the first things we are taught as children is how vital it is to wear a seatbelt. As adults, however, we tend to forget just how important it is to wear a seatbelt when sitting in the backseat of a taxi or Uber--even if you’re taking a short trip. People tend to mistakenly believe sitting in the back is safer than sitting in the front and use this misinformation to justify not buckling up. Children are not the only ones who should adhere to these slightly annoying albeit necessary regulations.

Despite the overwhelming evidence proving just how crucial seatbelts are in saving the lives of countless people, plenty of adults will admit to skipping seatbelts when sitting in the back. This is likely due to the incorrect presumption that it is okay to omit this important step. According to statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, also known as the IIHS, over half of the people who die in car crashes were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact.

Not wearing a seatbelt is a fatal mistake regardless of whether you are the driver or passenger. Warnings regarding seat belt use should always be heeded as seriously as possible, as you could potentially save your life by following this important rule of thumb. Don’t risk your life out of habit or laziness. Remember, safety first!
