Thanksgiving Road Trips

Thanksgiving Road Trips

Every year, about 43.5 million Americans take a road trip for Thanksgiving. While these trips can be fun, memorable experiences, they also increase the number of cars on the road. Additionally, Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday-drinking season and the evening before the feast, “Black Wednesday,” is the busiest night of the year for bars in some places.

How to Stay Safe

Combine increased traffic and higher rates of binge drinking, and you have a recipe for disaster on the roads. That being said, there are some tricks you can follow to keep yourself safe:

  • Plan to drive in the morning, when being on the road is the least dangerous
  • Get a good night’s sleep before your trip
  • Take time to eat a light, balanced breakfast before getting in the car
  • Make sure your car is clean and well-maintained (check your tire pressure, oil, and coolant)
  • Know your route and program your GPS before you start driving
  • Wear your seatbelt at all times
  • Avoid digital distractions
  • Entertain your children with a movie, tablet, book, or sightseeing car game
  • Secure loose objects in the trunk and keep pets in carriers
  • Pack healthy snacks and stay hydrated
  • Take regular breaks, occasionally switching drivers if possible
  • Be aware of weather conditions
  • Watch your speed
  • NEVER drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Many drivers remember to prepare before their trips but forget to be safe on the way back. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is just as dangerous as the night before and overeating before getting in the car can increase levels of drowsiness-causing tryptophan and melatonin.

When you are around other drivers, you should also stay vigilant. Never assume that someone else is taking the same precautions you are.

When the Unthinkable Happens

Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are, you cannot control the actions of others. Even if you are doing everything right, a drunk or distracted driver could come out of nowhere and cause an accident.
