How to Avoid a Slip & Fall Accident

How to Avoid a Slip & Fall Accident

Slip and fall accidents often lead to serious injuries. Victims may suffer traumatic brain injuries, lacerations, broken or fractured bones, spinal cord injuries, internal hemorrhaging, contusions, soft tissue injuries, and other trauma. June is National Safety Month, and we want you to be informed of practical tips to avoid slipping and falling.

There are several steps you can take to avoid a slip and fall accident:

  1. Watch where you are going. Distracted walking is just as dangerous as distracted driving. If you are looking at your phone or talking to someone else, you may not notice cracks in the sidewalk, electrical cords in the walkway, or clutter on the floor. It is important to avoid distractions while you walk, and to scan the path in front of you to look for tripping hazards.
  2. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Stilettos are much more unstable than tennis shoes or sandals. While high heels may be fashionable, it is important to wear sturdy shoes as much as possible. This can reduce your risk of breaking or spraining your ankle.
  3. Use handrails. When going up or down stairs, it is important to have one hand on the rail at all times. Running up and down stairs without holding onto the rail, or carrying heavy loads while you walk up a staircase, puts you at risk for serious injuries. If you slip or trip on the stairs, having one hand to catch you can help prevent a fall.
