What Are the Long-Term Effects of a Traumatic Brain Injury?

What Are the Long-Term Effects of a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) may result in swelling, bruising, and bleeding of the brain, and often have long-term symptoms. Our firm has represented countless clients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries because of someone else’s negligence. Whether your injury was caused by a car accident, slip and fall, or other type of incident, we will help you file a claim and pursue the justice you deserve.

There are several long-term symptoms of a TBI:

  • Physical symptoms. These include nausea, blurred vision, chronic pain and headaches, weakness, and seizures. Victims may also experience paralysis or spasticity, loss of bowel and bladder control, menstrual difficulties, changes in appetite, and sleep disorders.
  • Sensory symptoms. These include blurred or double vision, complete blindness, loss of hearing, tinnitus, and an impaired sense of taste and smell. Victims may not be able to distinguish between textures and temperatures, and may have a heightened sensitivity to light and sound. Involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) and difficulty judging distance may also result from a traumatic brain injury.
  • Cognitive symptoms. These include the inability to understand or speak language, slurred speech patterns, difficulty reading and writing, and the impaired ability to concentrate and focus. In addition, victims may suffer memory loss (amnesia), as well as general confusion, inability to process information and language, and loss of coordination.
  • Behavioral/emotional symptoms. These include anxiety, depression, irritability, impulsiveness, antisocial behaviors, and mood swings. Victims may also become more dependent, lack proper motivation, and be more impulsive and aggressive. Emotional therapy and medication may provide some relief for severe emotional and behavioral disorders.
